To reduce wood consumption and pollution from traditional cremations, the West Bengal government has developed eco-friendly cremation yards along the Hooghly River. These facilities use electric furnaces powered by solar grids, reducing emissions by over 80%. Special attention is given to cultural sensitivities, and families are provided ceremonial spaces and rituals. Each center can handle 20 cremations per day. In the first month, over 500 cremations were conducted using clean energy. The initiative is being expanded to smaller towns, aiming to make cremation sustainable while preserving dignity and tradition.
